La lucha continuó en Cartagena, donde el ejército realista asedió la ciudad en 1815 por vía terrestre y marítima. El pueblo Cartagenero resistió el hambre y las enfermedades, prefiriendo seguir en pie de lucha antes rendirse. Se resalta la entrega de la ciudad que costó la muerte de un tercio de su población pero que significó una victoria fundamental para la independencia de Colombia.
