The tomatillo plant produces little globular fruits that are covered in a husk. Because the fruit resembled a small tomato, European explorers gave it the name tomatillo. The brown husk of the tomatillo crinkles as it grows, similar to a Japanese lantern texture, and eventually breaks off as it ripens.

The botanical name for tomatillo is Physalis philadelphica. In the southern areas of Mexico, where it originated, it is also known as the Mexican husk tomato. There are also various tomatillo types, including the Rio Grande verde, pineapple tomatillo, and purple de milpa. The flavor, color, and size of tomatillos vary. For instance, the pineapple tomatillo has a bit of pineapple taste and comes in yellow.

The health advantages of tomatillos include improving digestion, alleviating strep throat, mumps, colds, and influenza, fighting cancer, treating ringworms, strengthening the immunity, decreasing weight and giving energy reserves, reducing blood pressure, and promoting heart health.
