Bulgaria & Turkey Are Cheapest Holiday Destinations for 2022, Report Shows (2024)

Marmaris Sea in Turkey leads the list for being the most affordable holiday destination for 2022, with a total of €31.45 or £26.13, for a basket of eight items considered as representatives for tourists to likely buy during their summer stays.

According to Post Office UK, such items include the price for a three-course evening meal for two with wine, a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, a Coca-Cola can, a large bottle of water, a cup of coffee, sunscreen and insect repellent, which tourists can get all of them for €31.45 in Turkey. In addition, such items can be purchased for €31.52 in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, which is ranked second-cheapest destination, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Out of 36 destinations, Portugal’s Algarve holiday spot is ranked third, also the cheapest in the Eurozone, costing 25 per cent less than stays in Costa del Sol, the holiday spot in Spain which holds the sixth position.

Unlike Portugal’s holiday spots, which cost around €53.49, Cape Town in South Africa and Paphos, which hold the fifth and sixth positions cost €64.14 and €68.01, respectively. Despite the prices in Cyprus dropping by 15 per cent- the destination has moved from 11th to the fifth position, and costs for visiting Cape town fell by 1.6 per cent – making it the best affordable long-haul destination.

In addition, year-on-year prices in Greece have also plunged by more than 15 per cent, especially on Corfu Island.

The remaining destinations in the EU include Funchal in Madeira, which has reached €77.18, showing a slight increase compared to the other months, and Lanzarote of the Canary Islands in Spain, with a cost of €85.71. Although not a holiday spot, Prague in the Czech Republic is also an affordable place to visit, with costs accounting for €80.84 for essential items.

“Sterling’s strength against most currencies has helped keep costs down. Once the sterling exchange rate is applied to local currency prices, British visitors will pay less in half of the destinations surveyed,” the report by the Post Office reads.

While costs in Bulgaria and Portugal are the most affordable, the northern part of the continent has higher prices. Iceland’s capital – Reykjavik- is the most expensive destination surveyed, followed by Barbados and Dubai, which all recorded a 20 per cent increase.

In addition, there have been noticeable surges in prices in several destinations – particularly those whose currencies have risen against the pound, such as Sri Lanka, which saw a 26 per cent increase. In comparison, visitors to Mexico can expect to pay around 22 per cent more in Cancun than a year ago.
