El vernier es un instrumento constituido por un par de reglas, una fija y una deslizante, y unos topes que facilitan la medida de dimensiones exteriores, dimensiones interiores y profundidades de objetos. Usualmente la reglilla móvil (nonio) tiene marcada diez divisiones que abarcan nueve divisiones de la regla fija (principal), de manera que cada división del nonio corresponde a 9/10 de una división de la regla principal.
