1. What is the most significant change or project in the city of Curitiba that you feel has
influenced it becoming more livable, clean, or sustainable
“Curitiba, located in Parana State, Brazil, has implemented several innovative systems to create
jobs, improve public transportation accessibility, promote housing development, and improve
waste management” (Sustainable Urban Planning). In my opinion, the most significant change or
project in the city of Curitiba that I feel has influenced it becoming more sustainable is the
improved public transportation accessibility. The implemented improved busing services in
Curitiba has ensured the city to be clean, sustainable, and livable. “it was estimated that the
introduction of the BRT had caused a reduction of about 27 million auto trips per year, saving
about 27 million liters of fuel annually, the city uses about 30 percent less fuel per capita,
resulting in one of the lowest rates of ambient air pollution in the country” (Goodman, et al.
N.d).
2. What do you think the future steps in Curitiba should be? For example, what would be a
good 'next project' to continue their movement forth in sustainable development and
quality urban planning?
I think a good step for Curitiba to continue their movement forth in sustainable development is
implementing urban revitalization. Urban revitalization involves reorganizing or redeveloping a
city, “focuses on improving areas that are in a state of decline, for example, areas that have a
troubling number of failing businesses or a stagnant or decreasing population growth” (Smith.
N.d.).
3. Do you feel that any of the planning, projects, policy, education programs, and/or
changes they have made would work well in your own city? Which one, and why?

I totally believe that these planning and projects would really work well in my cities. As a
developing city like mine Lagos, lacks proper infrastructure and busing services. Poor
