In een Siciliaans dorpje moet de vers van het Italiaanse vasteland geïmporteerde politieman Bellodi (Nero) de moord op een kleine bouwondernemer oplossen, maar hij loopt stuk op een muur van stilzwijgen. Als hij toch volhoudt komt hij op het spoor van een maffia-complot, maar getuigen worden geïntimideerd of gedood. Destijds was deze film een van de allereerste die onomwonden maffia-praktijken aan de kaak stelde. Gebaseerd op een roman van maffia-kenner Leonardo Sciascia. Regisseur Damiani werd op het filmfestival van Berlijn genomineerd voor een Gouden Beer.
