How to pass Oxford Speaking test? ›

Listen to the recording and think about how you could improve what you say. For example, you might need to use a wider range of vocabulary and grammar, you might need to correct some mistakes, or speak more clearly. You can even take some of your recordings to a teacher and ask for their feedback.

About the OOPT

The test consists of two parts with a total of 45 questions. The first part (Use of English) consists of multiple-choice questions and gap-fill exercises.

The Oxford Placement Test is in two parts - Use of English and Listening. Students are tested on their knowledge of grammatical form and vocabulary in the Use of English section, as well as their listening skills in the Listening section.

The overall pass rate at Oxford Test Centre for 2023 was 43.7 per cent – down from 48.7 per cent four years before. This was lower than the average rate across Great Britain of 48.2 per cent.

The Oxford Online Placement Test covers the six levels in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from A1 to C2, reporting scores between 1 and 120, as shown in the table below.

It is typically around 35% of applicants, but it varies slightly depending upon subject and college. Most Oxford colleges aim to interview 2.5 applicants per place on average. And, although it varies by subject, most subjects get around 7 applicants per place.

You cannot fail a placement test.

The test determines what courses you will be placed in when you begin at college. Depending on your score, you may need to take extra developmental courses or you may be able to start regular college courses right away.

Usually the test will ask you about 40-45 questions, which should take between 45 minutes and an hour. However, it all depends on you. The test is computer-adaptive. This means that it doesn't have a set number of questions, and the questions won't always be the same.

Is Oxford tougher than Harvard? ›

As of 2023, Harvard's acceptance rate is 4%. Half of the applicants accepted at Harvard have an SAT score between 1480 and 1580. On the other hand, Oxford's acceptance rate of about 17.5% is appealing. However, the Oxford acceptance rate and Harvard acceptance rate for international students happens to be 9%.

Failing examinations

The regulations permit students failing the Second Public Examination ('Finals') to re-enter but, unless they do so within the maximum number of terms specified for the subject concerned, they will not normally be eligible to obtain Honours.

They should be used with the relevant audio files and audio scripts (for Speaking and Listening), explanatory answer keys (for Listening and Reading) and model answers (for Speaking and Writing). The audio files include pauses and preparation times that match those in the real test.

The PAT is difficult, and it is designed to be that way, so do not feel disheartened if you feel you did not do your best as chances are everyone will have felt that way. Maximise your PAT score through effective PAT preparation.

It has been described in the past as "the hardest exam in the world". Two papers (the 'specialist papers') are on a single subject of the candidate's choice; the options are classics, English literature, economics, history, law, philosophy, and politics.
