Historically, the term “third world” was used to define countries that aligned with neither NATO nor the Communists during the Cold War. So, in that sense Mexico is a third world country.

Mexico is third world because it is non-aligned. First World = NATO aligned countries. Second World = Warsaw Pact Aligned Countries. The term second World is not used often anymore, but first world basically means it is similar to a NATO nation in that it is wealthy, good governance, etc.

Second and third-world countries can be described as developing or underdeveloped countries. These countries face many challenges in their growth and development—for example – China, Russia, Romania, Czech Republic. At the same time, the third-world countries are Brazil, Mexico, India, Argentina, Cambodia, etc.

Additionally, Mexico is sometimes colloquially referred to as "El Tricolor" in reference to the three colors of its national flag: green, white, and red.

According to one legend, the war deity and patron of the Mexica Huitzilopochtli possessed Mexitl or Mexi as a secret name. Mexico would then mean "Place of Mexi" or "Land of the War God." Another hypothesis suggests that Mēxihco derives from a portmanteau of the Nahuatl words for "moon" (mētztli) and navel (xīctli).

Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, and September 16 has been the national independence day ever since.

The great Aztec empire was preceded by advanced civilisations including the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec and Maya. The Olmec were in fact Mexico's first known society, who settled near what is now Veracruz on the Gulf Coast and are known for their carved head sculptures.

So although technically Mexico is by definition a 3rd world country, it is most certainly none of those other things. Mexico has a thriving economy, an incredibly developed infrastructure, and low infant mortality rates compared to most of the world.

Compared to developed countries, such as the United States, Canada and Australia, Mexico contains much broader swaths of abject poverty and regions where common luxuries that the developed world takes for granted, such as clean running water and access to quality medical care, are scarce.

The World Bank reported in 2009 that Mexico's Gross National Income in market exchange rates was the second highest in Latin America, after Brazil at US$1,830.392 billion, which lead to the highest income per capita in the region at $14,400. As such, Mexico established itself as an upper middle-income country.
