Where did the word “weird” come from?
Weirdly enough, the word “weird” didn’t begin with the definition it has today. It was actually tied to something much more otherworldly; the Weird Sisters, Three Fates, Norns, or however else they appeared in mythology, begin the origin story. These figures were supernatural beings with the ability to know the unknowable, often portraying a deep disregard for the plights of humankind. As time passed, the definition and connotations progressed from these impossible beings to more of the uncanny knowing they possessed. Then, eventually, by the 19th century, the word weird came to mean “disturbingly different” or “strange,” leading to today’s badge-of-pride title claiming as much individuality as possible in a population 8 billion strong.
